ESMOD Kuala Lumpur The One Academy: The Next Fashion Forefront

Students who wished to gain world-class fashion design and pattern making education can now do so at The One Academy by enrolling themselves with ESMOD Kuala Lumpur’s Diploma in Fashion Design & Pattern Making programme. The One Academy launched its latest collaborated-course recently in conjunction with the Fashion Design competition prize giving ceremony.

Through its collaboration with world’s top fashion school ESMOD Paris, The One Academy bring in a Paris fashion design programme while joining the list of 24 internationally-renowned schools in 15 countries around the world. More students are expressing their interest in pursuing career in fashion and will now have the chance to study a Paris fashion design programme locally at ESMOD Kuala Lumpur, to build their careers as a fashion designer, fashion buyers, fashion directors or coordinators, among others.

Gracing the launch was an opening speech by representative of The One Academy Principal’s Office, Loke Va Nee whose welcome address begun with quoting the iconic Coco Chanel- ‘Fashion is not something that exists in dresses only. Fashion is in the sky, in the street, fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live and what is happening’.

During the speech, Loke shared that to be a master, you have to be trained by the masters, therefore it has resulted The One Academy to partner with the best- ESMOD Paris. “With a great working partner like ESMOD Paris, we plan to raise the standards of our local fashion graduates to a higher defining field. We envision to producing trendsetters in this region by providing quality fashion education in Malaysia,” emphasized Loke.

As both institutions share similar goals, The One Academy always believed in producing only outstanding results, therefore, it welcomes its newest addition- Fashion Design & Pattern Making to join the rest of The One Academy’s five successful diploma programmes.

In conjunction of the Fashion Design Art competition, Loke expressed “We are very excited to announce the winners for this competition as we might be picking the future Vivienne Westwood or Tom Ford, so all the best!”

The opening speech was followed by launching of multimedia 3D-mapping created by The One Academy’s Multimedia Design team. Next, there was an industry experience sharing by highly acclaimed Malaysian fashion designer Jonathan Cheng together with Head of ESMOD Kuala Lumpur Fashion Design department, Yen Yong.

A brief introduction of ESMOD Paris; the reputable school was the first and long established fashion design school in the world. It was founded in 1841 by Alexis Lavigne, master tailor and purveyor to the court of Empress Eugénie. With a unique teaching method, Lavigne laid the cornerstone for a successful teaching system that is still practiced today. Lavigne was the inventor of the ‘Lavigne Bust’ a draping mannequin, measuring tape and others tailoring tools such as rulers, set squares and French curves.

Today, ESMOD’s international network has transmitted ‘French fashion expertise’ to meet the market’s needs for 170 years; many prominent fashion designers such as Jean Paul Gaultier, Nina Garcia and Thierry Mugler honed their skills at ESMOD. Prioritizing in offering a unique and high level of teaching, ESMOD Kuala Lumpur fashion design and pattern making modules are mandatory for the possibility to obtain outstanding results and professional integration in the fashion industry.

Following the launching, the Fashion Design competition prize giving ceremony was held to celebrate the creative efforts of talented fashion design participants. Themed ‘Futuristic Fashion’, the Fashion Design Art Competition was organized by ESMOD Kuala Lumpur The One Academy with an objective to open its doors to young aspiring fashion designers, to win scholarship to study at ESMOD Kuala Lumpur with other fantastic prizes and to kick start their career in fashion design! Presenting the prizes and scholarships to the winners was Tatsun Hoi, Principal of The One Academy.

In 1st place, Aaron Yong Wei Hao, a SPM graduate from Tshung Tsin Secondary School, Kota Kinabalu Sabah won an ESMOD Kuala Lumpur The One Academy scholarship worth RM60, 000, a trip to Paris, an Apple iPhone 4 plus a 6-month iFeel Magazine subscription. 2nd place winner Heng Bowie from Foon Yew High School Kulai, Johor acquired scholarship worth RM30, 000 and an Apple iPad 2; and finally, 3rd place was seized by Wong Su Jean, a SPM graduate from SMK Seafield Subang Jaya, Selangor, took away scholarship worth RM20, 000 and an Apple iPod Touch. Last but not least, seven fellow consolation winners received an ESMOD Kuala Lumpur The One Academy scholarship worth RM10, 000 each.

17-year old winner Aaron Yong was overwhelmed by his winnings. His design that consists of futuristic elements with digital finishing grabbed the judges’ attentions. Yong shared that most of his inspiration was based on photographs taken to help him design an avant-garde attire.

Yong, who is currently preparing to contend for the annual Sabah art competition, has also landed several top places in other competitions, e.g. at the annual orchid competition. Besides drawing, Yong is gifted in craftworks, sewing & cooking and is passionate in gardening, a hobby that elevates his art inspiration most. He is looking forward to pursue his studies & career in fashion design, with thanks to his mother who encouraged him to endeavor in arts, craft and needlework.

Effort has been made to ensure that students receive the chance to apply their creative skills and creative thinking is reflected through The One Academy’s primary belief in ‘Just World Class Results’ during the fashion design competition.
